Day 22- Monday, 4/6/20: The US death toll will pass 10,000 today. The news in other countries is a bit more optimistic-- it seems like other countries have been able to start flattening the curve. The pace of fatalities may be slowing in Italy; the cumulative death toll there is now15,887. Spain announced only a 3% increase. California's backlog of tests has been reduced from 60,000 to 13,000 but the testing is still not adequate. California has 12,026 positive cases as of Saturday (a 12.4% increase in 24 hours). Coronavirus appears to be more deadly for men than women.
In Spain, about 35 people have died every hour over the weekend. Day 19- Friday, 4/3/20: More than 1 million cases worldwide. It took four months for the world to hit 500,000 cases; it took 1 week to go from 500,00 to 1 million. 25% of all cases are in the US. We will pass 250,000 cases sometime today. China is telling its diplomats not to return to safeguard against bringing in new cases. There is a rolling concern of numbers reported given that testing is still at capacity. There is a testing backlog of 59,000 cases in California alone, meaning that people have tested but have not received their results yet. Only 4 other states report their backlogs.
Day 11- Thursday, 3/26/20: Louisiana is becoming a new global hotspot for the disease- fastest growth of new cases in the world, similar to those in Spain and Italy. The worldwide total is approaching half a million. Spain continues to surge with 600+ deaths yesterday, but the rate of fatalities has slowed. The US confirmed over 13,000 cases yesterday. We are at ~70k cases here and should hit 6 figures by/over the weekend. Yesterday was the first day the US reported over 200 deaths, and more than 900people in the US have died in total. That number might pass 1000 as soon as today. Dyson is developing a new ventilator in record time. It turns out that a large soccer game in late February (2/19 Champions League match in Bergamot) may have been the catalyst for Italy's large numbers.
There's an orange tree downstairs, and I'm pretty sure that no one in this complex ever eats the oranges. I've tried them in past years and they were really sour. But this year they are so sweet, like actually very good. When I bring them back up and wash them, I let them dry on the window sill and they are just everywhere. Also realized that eating lunch outside on the deck is pretty nice. Oatmeal isn't something I've eaten very regularly until now, but now I find it to be a filling comfort food that's easy to dress up. I love cooking it with mashed banana and dates-- it kind of caramelizes it. I left a thick slice of challah out overnight so that I can make french toast for breakfast tomorrow.
Day 12- Friday, 3/27/20: Prime Minister of Britain, Boris Johnson, has tested positive. US is #1 with 85,000 cases-- we have more cases than Italy or China (which has over 3x the population). NY saw the number of hospitalized cases increase by 40% in a single day yesterday. 385 people have died in NY so far. On Tuesday night, NY had the highest number of 911 alls ever recorded (over 6000). Los Angeles and Louisiana are on the same track as NY. In Spain, 10% cases are healthcare workers. In Italy the number of casualties/day since 3/11 has been 463 people (during WWII it was 338/day). Australia is enacting its military to enforce isolation orders. Singapore has criminalized the act of intentionally standing or sitting close to someone punishable by 6 months in jail or $7k fine. Minnesota's youngest COVID patient is a 5 month old. There is a shortage of eggs-- sales up 44%, prices up 180%. NYU is offering field promotions-- allowing students from any field of medicine to graduate early and start working in April. Other medical schools in the nation are considering following in their footsteps. USPS is the only gov agency is that is capable of knocking on every door in the US in a given day-- they may be a major part of our disaster plan, delivering tests or medicine to people at home.
A CSA box was delivered today, and in it was some Cara Cara oranges that are some of the best oranges we've ever had. They looked like grapefruit when I first cut into them. Sliced up one from our tree to compare, too. It was so perfect slicing into them and they were really a treat. My french toast this morning was pretty amazing, too.

Day 5 - Friday, 3/20/20: This morning the number of global cases passed 250,000. It took 3 months to reach 100,000 cases worldwide, but took 12 days to log an additional 100,000. We could reach a point in a number of days where we are adding 100,000 cases a day. The US has doubled the number of confirmed cases in two days. Spain has reported 1,903 new cases (just under 20,000 cases total with 800 deaths). Belgium reported 462 case and 16 new fatalities. 3405 deaths in Italy and morgues there are running out of space. NY City alone has 2,275 new cases for a total of 3,615. China has reported 0 new local cases for the second day in a row (there are still cases brought in from abroad). So far in the US, younger people are making up a larger amount than anticipated; 40% of those sick enough to require hospitalization in the US have been between 20-54 years old. 20% of hospitalized are between 20-44.
In many areas, people are mandated to stay home unless necessary to leave for necessary goods or services, and many states and countries are following suit. In the Bay Area where I live, an order to take Shelter in Place was issued earlier this week, and California issued a state-wide stay-at-home order yesterday.

In a best case scenario, people are to work from home unless leaving for grocery or medical, or to exercise outside alone, and to always default to practicing social distancing. I am fortunate to fall into this category. However many people and businesses are in crisis, they are not able to simply work from home, and it's not clear how they will recover despite the different stimuli packages that are being passed. We are most certainly headed into an economic downturn. There are many health care workers, grocery store and pharmacy employees, drivers for delivery services, and so many others that we don't see, that are enabling us to get what we need at greater personal risk to themselves and their families. My dad is a shift lead at Walgreens and has been feeling under the weather, though we are relieved to know that his symptoms do not seem to align with COVID-19. Each of us have folks in our lives to be concerned about, and we are all at risk to some degree.

These are truly strange times. This has been compared to the H1N1 pandemic that infected one third of the world's population in 1918. Although it's been nearly a decade since studying public health at university, this is one of the cornerstone events that has been imprinted in my mind as the most severe pandemic in recent history. Even at that time, I had trouble reconciling just how many people were infected and killed by a strain of influenza.

I've started keeping a log of each day, just for my personal documentation around what it's been like for me, as a person in my thirties living in the Bay Area, and as new information is uncovered every day. This is a personal account, and not intended to be a research paper or source of news, so many of the numbers listed will not be cited. However many of the daily updates will pull information from the Coronavirus Daily Briefing podcast, among other sources. I expect to post these logs once a week, probably over the weekend.

It feels surreal to be writing this. Tensions are high everywhere. The future is uncertain and we will learn more in the coming weeks. For now, we are being vigilant about limiting our exposure to the virus in the ways that we can.

Stay safe out there.

Happy New Year! I want to learn Japanese home cooking, so I'm starting off with Toshikoshi Soba. It's a buckwheat soba noodle dish that's traditionally eaten on New Year's Eve. Apparently this is good for letting go of the hardships of the year, and that's definitely something I can get behind. I like how it turned out!

Here is the recipe I used from JapanCentre, slightly modified:

Ingredients
Noodle soup:
1.5L bonito or kombu kelp dashi stock
200ml soy sauce
100ml mirin
1 tbsp sugar

Noodles:
200g soba buckwheat noodles

Toppings:
1 scrambled egg
cut up nori
enoki mushrooms
chopped green onions

How To Prepare
In a large pan, make your dashi stock. Next, add the mirin and simmer gently for a few minutes. Now add the sugar and let it dissolve before adding the soy sauce. This makes the soup for your soba noodles.

Make your soba noodles per package instructions. Drain the noodles and rinse them in cold water, gently rubbing the noodles to remove any excess starch on the surface. Next, thinly slice the spring onions and any other garnishes.

Gently re-heat the stock and pour into bowls, then add the noodles and garnish.Jeaninehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15178694638379995442noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8517609511181089178.post-61887206138026713052016-12-14T10:05:00.001-08:002016-12-14T10:05:39.465-08:00Flowers

Last month we spent a week camping in Zion National Park. I had been on a disastrous trip to Bryce and Zion Canyon in middle school, and I think all I remember from that trip are things like sleeping on the floor of a freezing ballroom floor in a casino because our bus broke down, or going to the emergency room during a lightning storm-- not how stunningly gorgeous this place actually is. So, here are mostly a buncha pics of rocks:

At the top of Angel's Landing. This was my favorite hike because it's like a regular 2 mile and then the last half mile gets kinda crazy and you need to use these chains to help you along the rest of the way up. Something like 6 people have died on this hike!

2014 went by in a flash. A year ago I was devastated that I would no longer be spending 40+ hours a week with one of my best friends and I wasn't quite as busy with work yet. I had just started going to the library and discovered reading for leisure as an adult, and I was in full swing writing letters to my pen pals. Here is some of what filled my year!

Monthly Friends Dinners

I started off January by inviting some of my friends from college to dinner at my place. It was kind of awesome, so we decided to do it every month as a rotating potluck. It's been really great to know I'll see folks at least once a month and catch up with what is going on with everyone.

Art

This year I decided to prioritize art in my life. Because I made the space, I was able to continue bookbinding and dabble in other mediums like watercolor and calligraphy. It has been really amazing to give myself permission to do this otherwise I would have just felt guilty about the time and money spent, but it's made me way, way happier.

Library advocacy

Last year I rediscovered my love for the library. So much so that I started serving on the city's Library Advisory Commission. It's been a great experience getting to know the landscape of this kind of advocacy, and getting to know Oakland in a new way for me, too.

Going offline

So much of my life is spent in front of a computer for work. The majority of social media, although I have an account on nearly every major platform, is just noise. I took a break from social media for a couple months in the summer and it was great. Then a couple months ago I decided to go off again. I made the exception to hop back on Instagram during my recent trip, but for the most part, the lack of updates had been fantastic, and if people want to get ahold of me, they call/email/text.

New cities

Through work, I had the opportunity to go to cities I had never been to before this year. Atlanta, Baltimore, DC, Brooklyn/NY, and Portland were all new places for me. I had never really been to the east coast before so it was neat to be able to spend some time there, and luckily not all of it was for work! Which leads me to my next topic..

Epistolary realness

I got to meet my penpal, Chad! Not only that, it was totally awesome. So awesome that I actually wanted to stay friends with him after! He's coming to visit in January and I'm soo excited to show him around Oakland. Watch out, we're going to eat all the yummy foods!

Oh, and also..

I met my partner this year. All I'll say about this is that this has been the biggest and best change for me, and I can't wait for next year.

Happy 2015, everyone! It's going to be a good one!

I'm not sure how it actually happened, but I am off work for a couple weeks and arrived in Hong Kong this morning! I'm visiting my sister for the holidays. I'm exhausted and excited, and I'm eternally grateful for the love and support it took from several people to get me here. My sister and I went to the market to get some groceries since we'll be cooking all throughout Christmas Eve. I even found mangosteen! I remember eating these the first time I came here and it being my favorite fruit and I'm beyond thrilled to find it here again. Noms.

A new Murakami book was great kick off last month. I can't say it was incredibly surprising, or that it was very different to me from many of his other books. But that's not exactly why I keep reading his novels. It's like seeing a friend you've known for a very long time--you know them pretty well and there's something quite comforting about that. This book is one that doesn't have that element of magic realism to it. The first Murakami novel I read, Norwegian Wood, was like that too, and it's my favorite. A lot of reviews I've read are saying that the two are basically the same, but I have to disagree. Maybe I should go back and read Norwegian Wood, though. Not much else to say about this one, except no BINGO.
I've had this book for some months now and I finally finished it. It was one that is quick to read once you get the courage to dive into it simply because it's impossible to put down.

I knew I was making a mistake.

I decided it would be a strategic move to enter from the exit, thinking that the affordably priced seating solutions I came for would be more toward the end than the beginning of the display, if not in the self serve furniture section. There were so many people that it was like being in line at Pirates of the Caribbean at Disneyland (again, on a weekend). I felt like I was a salmon swimming upstream to spawn, only the stream was a crazy furniture and child-filled maze. I passed through many couples and I wondered how many of those relationships would be stronger because of this trip to IKEA, and how many would end because of it.

Damn, the lighting fixture section. Keep walking. You don't need glowing orbs in your living room. How many other things are you going to get distracted by? How many different dishes can you put pastries on? But that one has a glass casing and a Swedish name with an umlaut over the o (arv bröllop in case you were wondering). But I guess I can stand to reorganize my spices so I should probably get these little jars. But you probably don't need succulents. Or fake succulents.

This place has everything. There are too many choices. I kind of want Swedish meatballs even though they're kind of gross. But I'll be damned if I don't leave this place without a vanilla cone.

You came here for stools, goddamnit.

I power weave through mobs of families and find the stools at $4.99 each, as advertised. Perfect. Push this shipping container of a shopping cart to the register where I get into an 15-items-or-fewer express lane since I have 10 stools and 2 packs of glass spice containers. This woman, this indignant woman, gives me the stink eye because she has like 30 of the same item and I can tell she thinks this means that she has one item, meaning that she should be able to bypass this line entirely. Ugh. Dish some side eye back to her. Please.

I finally get the hell out of check out and am about to leave but before I stop to grab a vanilla cone, I see that the line is hella long. Surprise, another long line at IKEA. What else was I expecting? I contemplate standing in that line for 20 seconds. I make the better decision to forgo the vanilla cone (goodbye, sweet, delicious frozen treat) and walk away. As I walk out of IKEA, I see a kid in a shopping cart throwing a temper tantrum. It's like he is personifying my feelings for me. I deserved that vanilla cone.

Nothing left now but to go home, assemble stools, and put some spices into jars.
Which is technically infinitely more than zero.. (I may or may not be 8 books behind my reading goal for the year, eep!)

All About Love: New Visions by bell hooks

This is definitely a book that I will learn a lot from every time I come back to it in the future. I started it expecting to read about romantic love, but it was so much more than that. It gives a working definition of love, and talks about love in our lives. How it exists (or doesn't) among violence, racism, sexism, and how justice plays a role in love and vice versa. A lot of this book affirmed affirmed my feelings about how I want to walk through this world, and of course, I gained new insight as well. The religious tone in this book made me a bit uncomfortable, but I understand that something like love is difficult to talk about while omitting critical parts of one's self such as their spirituality.

A few things that really resonated with me after this initial reading:
- love does not fear
- love is a choice and we must do so with intention
- perfect love is a commitment to constructive struggle and changeJeaninehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15178694638379995442noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8517609511181089178.post-63838889070961138352014-09-10T11:48:00.000-07:002014-09-10T11:48:55.356-07:00Library Project: In Other Words

I didn't have a whole lot of free time while I was in Portland. Outside of work stuff, I really only had time to go to Voodoo Doughnuts and In Other Words, a feminist community center. Even though it's very much a bookstore (you might have seen is parodied on Portlandia), I'm including it here because there was a lending library inside of it.

I really enjoyed spending time here. There's a rad zine section, lots of trinkets, clothes, and other wares for sale, and tons of cool revolutionary stuff adorning the walls. The bathroom was kind of lovely in that it was filled with affirmations of different sorts posted throughout. You can tell as soon as you walk in that they put a tremendous amount of care and attention into making this a safe space for anyone who might pass through the doors. There are couches and board games so you can just hang out, play, and read. I'm really glad that we took the time to come here, even though it was a short visit. Jeaninehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15178694638379995442noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8517609511181089178.post-86950444449248085442014-09-08T10:25:00.001-07:002014-09-08T10:25:35.918-07:00Family BBQ

This is one of the most beautiful pieces of literature I have ever read. I've never read something where I was less concerned with the plot because the writing was so exquisitely beautiful. It is authors like GGMarquez who turn the written word into an art form. I've heard this book touted as one of the greatest love stories of all time.. and I think that's definitely questionable, as I would find most of the things that happen in this book to be pretty creepy, but the writing is spectacular. It's difficult for me to imagine this in movie form because there is no way that it could do the writing any sort of justice. I wanted to savor every word as I read this book. I gushed about this book way more while I was reading it and shortly after, and folks have told me that One Hundred Years of Solitude is way better. I'll have to find out soon.
Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

I wanted to like this book way more than I did because it was it was written by an Asian American author and spoke to the experience of growing up Asian in America. The character development fell flat for me. I found these characters difficult to relate to, which is unusual for me in a book like this since growing up as an Asian American person has made me aware of the experience that I and many others experience with internalized oppression on a daily basis. The writing itself wasn't particularly beautiful, but it moved quickly enough. I know I'm not exactly selling it, but I guess I'm saying that I thought this book was okay. (I know, I really have a way with words myself right now).
I read both of these books in July. I read nothing in August and I am 6 books behind schedule in meeting my reading goal for the year. I feel like not reading is eating away at my soul. I need my quiet moments back. More on this later.
