Shelter in Place Log: Week 3

Day 15- Monday, 3/30/20: Bay Area to extend coronavirus shelter-in-place order through at least May 1. Deaths in the US will pass 2,500 nationwide at some point today with more than 1,000 deaths reported in NY state alone. Globally more than 30,000 people have been killed by Coronavirus. The number of US citizens that have died is larger than the number of US service members that died in the war in Afghanistan which was at 2,448. Italy now has reported over 10,000 deaths. In Spain, about 35 people have died every hour over the weekend. There are concerns that these numbers are actually low, as they don't count people who have died at home in Spain, Italy, and France.

GE workers who normally make jet engines have walked off the job demanding that their factories are converted to make ventilators instead. The US reported 500 deaths in 25 hours for the first time yesterday. France has surged past 3,000 deaths. Spain has a new record on 849 new deaths. Death toll in NY state has passed 1,200. Stress is starting to hit me in a different way this week. Spending more time working, but I’m not being as productive despite my efforts. My peers seem to be handling things ok. Maybe I appear to be handling things ok too.

Day 17- Wednesday, 4/1/20: Trump and officials are expecting the death toll to possibly reach 100,000-240,000 people before this is all said and done. US fatalities topped 800 in the 24 hour period yesterday. "We are facing a global health crisis unlike any in the 75 year history of the UN-- one that is killing people, spreading human suffering, and upending human lives" - UN Report. The Pentagon may provide as many as 100,000 body bags for civilian authorities. CDC says that as many as 25% of coronavirus cases are asymptomatic. Spain reported 950 new deaths, passing 10,00 for the first time. A count inside Hunan province has been placed on a new lockdown, showing that an aftershock of the disease can happen. US and Turkey are on the fastest trajectory in terms of new case counts. In Ecuador, the dead bodies have been piling up everywhere; they've been abandoned in busy hospitals, even wrapped in plastic and put out on streets as families struggle to find space in cemeteries. We will pass 250,000 cases sometime today. China is telling its diplomats not to return to safeguard against bringing in new cases. There is a rolling concern of numbers reported given that testing is still at capacity.
