Shelter in Place Log: Week 1

Day 1 - Monday, 3/16/20: Known cases of Coronavirus in the US exceeded 3,500 spread across 49 states, prompting mass cancellation of events. CDC is recommending halting gatherings of over 50 people for the next 8 weeks (all sporting events, weddings, concerts, etc). Bars a restaurants closed in NYC and their schools have closed too. The CEO of Universal Music groups has tested positive. MGM is shutting down Aria, Bellagio, Luxor, Mirage, and other hotels on the Las Vegas strip. Apple, Nike, Patagonia and other retails stores shutting down. Cathay Pacific is adding flights from US to HK, and HK is now being seeing as a safe haven. 386 deaths in Italy yesterday. They had reported 200 deaths for each of the last 3 days and they only had their first Corona related deaths 3 weeks ago. Now over 1800 people have died because of overloaded hospitals. France seems to be going the way of Italy-- 5,420 cases surpassed on Sunday with 127 deaths. In ‘defining moment,’ San Francisco to order residents to stay home over coronavirus. Young people without symptoms are spreading this more than we realized.

Day 2 - Tuesday, 3/17/20: More than 4,400 people have tested positive in US, at least 86 people have died (22 deaths yesterday). More people have died outside of China than inside of China. Suggestion from government to close schools and avoid groups of more than 10 people. Ohio cancelled presidential primary scheduled for today. Kentucky Derby rescheduled for the first time since WWII. Total caseload in Europe is ~62,000. Testing numbers are rising rapidly in the US; we are now testing over 10,000 a day (in the ballpark of South Korea, although we have 6x the population). Italy, Spain, France all shut down. Britain seems to be taking a more laissez faire approach. "We might be living in a very different world for a year or more" - Neil Ferguson, head of the modeling program at Imperial’s MRC centre for global infectious disease analysis.

Day 3 - Wednesday, 3/18/20:
The US passed the 100 deaths milestone last night (2/3 of deaths have been Washington, New York, California but 14 other states have had at least 1 fatal case). Number of known cases in the US is now over 5,600. Pentagon is providing up to 5 million N95 masks available to health care workers, as well as 2,000 of its ventilators. A school in Kansas became the first school to shut down for the remainder of the year. Nevada has shut down all gambling and casinos. Chicago's Midway airport had to issue ground stop after several technicians tested positive. US & Canada are in mutual talks to close the border between countries.   • Grocery run at Safeway ($165.81) - couldn't find eggs, garlic, sourdough, dry beans, or rice
  • Breakfast- eggs, potatoes, bacon + coffee
  • Lunch- oatmeal, date, banana, blueberry, pumpkin pie spice, almond butter
  • Snack- almond butter and strawberry jelly sandwich

  • Dinner- carnitas w/ refried beans and spanish cauliflower rice (+ sour cream & cheddar)
  • Dessert- marionberry pie ice cream + trail mix


Day 4 - Thursday, 3/19/20: Global cases pass 200,000. Italy has the deadliest day since crisis began with 475 deaths overnight and pressed charges against 40,000 for violating terms of the lockdown. US State Department issues unprecedented ‘do not travel’ warning over coronavirus. California governor orders statewide stay-at-home order (Executive Order N-33-20). BART to reduce hours after losing 90% of ridership. Governor Newsom says 56% of Californians are expected to be infected with COVID-19 in the next 8 weeks. Amazon confirms first known Coronavirus case in an American warehouse.
  • Breakfast- oatmeal with milk, dates, pumpkin pie spice, vanilla protein powder, blueberries, trail mix, almond butter+ coffee
  • Lunch- bacon fried rice with eggs and kimchi
  • Snack- instant noodles + orange

Today is the first day of Spring. It is so odd to go outside for solitary exercise, and see how beautiful it is, how everything is lush, coming back to life and blooming.



Day 5 - Friday, 3/20/20: This morning the number of global cases passed 250,000. It took 3 months to reach 100,000 cases worldwide, but took 12 days to log an additional 100,000. We could reach a point in a number of days where we are adding 100,000 cases a day. The US has doubled the number of confirmed cases in two days. Spain has reported 1,903 new cases (just under 20,000 cases total with 800 deaths). Belgium reported 462 case and 16 new fatalities. 3405 deaths in Italy and morgues there are running out of space. NY City alone has 2,275 new cases for a total of 3,615. China has reported 0 new local cases for the second day in a row (there are still cases brought in from abroad). So far in the US, younger people are making up a larger amount than anticipated; 40% of those sick enough to require hospitalization in the US have been between 20-54 years old. 20% of hospitalized are between 20-44.
  • Breakfast- eggs, bacon, potatoes w /sriracha ketchup
  • Lunch- oatmeal, date, blueberry, cherry, pumpkin pie spice, almond butter, chia seeds
  • Snack- tuna salad on toast
  • Workout- 2.5 mile run
  • Dinner- chili verde with ground pork over Spanish cauliflower rice w/ sour cream, cheddar cheese, & avocado
  • Dessert- couple handfuls of trail mix + thin mints (a lot of them)
  • Late night snack- orange from downstairs

I no longer know the difference between a meal and a snack. Time of day? Portion sizes?


Day 6 - Saturday, 3/21/20: Known U.S. cases have surged above 21,000. The United States closed its borders to nonessential travelers from Canada and Mexico beginning at midnight on Saturday. Wall Street shuddered its way through its worst week since the 2008 financial crisis. Minnesota reported its first death due to Coronavirus. Confirmed Coronavirus Cases Are Growing Faster In The United States Than Any Other Country In The World. "Unicorn" Flexport finds the face-masks that SF hospitals need.

  • Slept in until 9am

  • Breakfast- corned beef hash with onions, potatoes, fried eggs + coffee
  • Lunch- tuna salad on toast & an orange
  • Chores- laundry, wash linens, clean half of apartment
  • FaceTime with sister
  • Snack- two slices of ciabatta with brie and salami, half an orange
  • FaceTime and movie with Kunal (Murder Mystery)
  • Snack- slice of ciabatta with tomato-stewed lentils
  • Workout- Yoga with Adriene | Home, Day 2, dumbbell rows, foam rolling

It was a huge relief to not have to think about work today. Having a day to sleep in and take it slow was really helpful.


Day 7 - Sunday, 3/22/20: The US is now 3rd highest globally in COVID-19 total cases. This comes as the number of deaths have now surpassed 13,000 across the globe. Italy reports 793 more deaths. Russia’s military is sending medical aid to Italy. Economic stimulus may exceed $2 trillion, up from $1 trillion. Emirates said it would suspend all passenger flights starting Wednesday (cargo planes will continue to deliver supplies and medical equipment around the world). FEMA begins shipping masks from national stockpile.
  • Workout: 4.5 mile run
  • Breakfast (at lunch time)- 2 slices ciabatta topped with tomato-stewed lentils and fried eggs w/chili crisp, and orange + coffee
  • Second Lunch- two slices of toast with tuna salad
  • Happy Hour Hangout with friends
  • Snack- orange
  • Dinner- soup (kale, potatoes, tomatoes, Italian sausage)
  • Dessert- leftover candy from halloween (yes, halloween) + marionberry pie ice cream

I made a huge batch of Japanese curry that will probably feed me for most of next week.
