Just one this month. Which is technically infinitely more than zero.. (I may or may not be 8 books behind my reading goal for the year, eep!)
All About Love: New Visions by bell hooks
This is definitely a book that I will learn a lot from every time I come back to it in the future. I started it expecting to read about romantic love, but it was so much more than that. It gives a working definition of love, and talks about love in our lives. How it exists (or doesn't) among violence, racism, sexism, and how justice plays a role in love and vice versa. A lot of this book affirmed affirmed my feelings about how I want to walk through this world, and of course, I gained new insight as well. The religious tone in this book made me a bit uncomfortable, but I understand that something like love is difficult to talk about while omitting critical parts of one's self such as their spirituality.
A few things that really resonated with me after this initial reading:
- love does not fear
- love is a choice and we must do so with intention
- perfect love is a commitment to constructive struggle and change
